He seems bad at this. He should get some trick arrows. Or some patience.
Rocktopus 9th May 2018, 5:19 AM edit delete reply
But he DID get a headshot between the eyes

"Monster Biologie 101 - Where are the Vitals".

A class you really shouldn't skip.
Rocktopus 9th May 2018, 5:20 AM edit delete reply
I believe there's a variant Bard class specifically for that

The issue, at least with third edition, was that arrows did not gain in damage like melee weapons did from strength. Dex gave a bonus to hit, just not to damage.
Rocktopus 9th May 2018, 5:22 AM edit delete reply
Tell me about it. The only chance archers had to keep up were rapid-fire arrow feats mixed with magic arrows. And even then, it just never stacked up to the 18 Strength half-orc barbarian with a greataxe and Power Attack
Would you want two 1d8 arrows, or a 2d6+8 greatsword with a 19-20 critical range?

Well, on the flipside, ranged weapons should have at least some sorts of drawbacks, given the increased tactical options they generally give.

I also find the difference between the shots of the elven archer and the rogue interesting. The elven archer is an excellent shot even without time to aim, but does not know where to aim. The rogue has a crossbow and did take time to aim, but knows where to aim to kill or heavily damage the target. If this is an "interpretation" of sneak attacks or similar mechanisms in D&D, I think it is really neat and very nicely done. Though one should of course remember that D&D *is* high fantasy, despite a lot of the mechanisms making fairly good sense a lot of the time.

Thanks, glad you noticed the details!

In 3.5 at least there were bows you could get that were designed for specific strength bonuses. They didn't scale if you strength went up beyond that without buying a new, stronger one, but they did add some of your strength score at least.

I feel like elf boy needs to realize that maniacal idiot frogmen might not have very large brains and he needs to aim for the liver or something. He can't have been adventuring long if he still assumes every creature has their anatomy arranged like normal humanoids.
What is he going to do when he fights insect monsters besides whine a lot?
Rocktopus 9th May 2018, 7:12 PM edit delete reply
I think you might have answered your own question
Rudofaux 9th May 2018, 7:38 PM edit delete reply
For every arrow hit thus far.
Rocktopus 9th May 2018, 10:37 PM edit delete reply
Does it count as a critical fail if he hit?
Rudofaux 10th May 2018, 3:31 PM edit delete reply
I would say yeah if it had no effect other than to aggravate.

That moment when the cliche Elf Archer can't be a cliche.

He always wanted to be a Barbarian, but his dad wanted him to be an Archer.

Now he's paying for not being a rebel.

What the froblins don't have in brain power, they have in massive skull bones apparently XD
Rocktopus 10th May 2018, 12:40 PM edit delete reply
That adds up
padanew 10th May 2018, 1:00 PM edit delete reply
Why only normal arrows? Why not poisoned or fire arrows? Why not an arrow that has a bullet explosive head on it? There is no such thing as overkill.
Rocktopus 10th May 2018, 5:10 PM edit delete reply
Costs money

That's what they got an alchemist in the party for - their problem if they don't see the potential.
ErictheTolle 12th May 2018, 6:33 AM edit delete reply
The alchemist is a little large to be used as an arrow.
Worstcase 12th May 2018, 9:05 AM edit delete reply
That'd still be more useful than he has been in this battle so far XD
