Marblegate must be prime real estate for heal-capable churches, temples, etc. I'm sure they rake in plenty of 'donations'. That smiling priest is probably smiling because he has the fattest bank account in town.
I am surprised that the party did not have healing potions going in. Even if the alchemist forgot to prep them, I would still carry my own for just in case circumstances.
I have always played a healer who later in life became a cleric healer. That way I could heal other players with normal healing agent then saved my major healing spell for emergency events.
In my world they do; I have it so a heal check restores 3 + (2x Constitution bonus) but you can only do it once a combat (or if the target gets critically hit). Gotta love homebrew :)

And it costs you two charges from a healing kit unless you're willing to accept a penalty on your check.
