"ok...we may have almost died to get a cool staff that controls the fate of the world, but what if we broke it?"
Rocktopus 29th Nov 2018, 6:15 PM edit delete reply
A broken Staff of the Magi is fun in its own unique way...

'Fun' as in you activate it's retributive strike as you throw it into a giant Wyrms maw, or Fun as in you tried to absorb a spell but it maxes out and blows up with 400 unavoidable damage in your face?

I used to play Nethack quite a bit, and when cornered in a dangerous situation with far too few charges left on my wand of fireball (or other such wand that would have otherwise been useful), breaking the wand and causing a huge explosion was always a fun last resort. Provided, of course, that I had enough HP left to survive the blast. Or if I had acquired fire-resistance. (And impressively enough, the developers were savvy enough to code the monster AI such that sometimes monsters would do the same thing too, in a suicide-bombing, go-out-with-a-bang bid.)

Excellent wording!

Randulf is a true poet and Renaissance-man if ever there was one!

Debriefings are important for a group so that you can learn from your mistakes are learn other important view points as well as praise for things well done.

True that

Great Comic - If only my Game group would go through that first part. I generally get "Whew! that was close- TREASURE!!". Which, admittedly, is basically what this is.
Rocktopus 29th Nov 2018, 10:47 PM edit delete reply
Hey, that can be a fun way to play, too!
Sturzkampf 29th Nov 2018, 8:37 PM edit delete reply
That which doesn't kill us, makes us stronger. Or put another way, you just faced all your worst fears in half an hour and you only lost 2 hp and we got loads of stuff. You are the Moloch von Zinzer of Marblegate!

That which doesn't kill you, will be coming up in a future therapy session.

I said that line about making me strongeo once to my GM. Her responce was "Landmines" Just thought I should share this one.

New banner. Fancy seeing you there, Ozzi. Don't you know it's about Colleen and Randulf now? You snooze, you lose, as your new buddy Alexus said.
Rocktopus 29th Nov 2018, 10:48 PM edit delete reply
Hey, he's a sort of a main character; he deserves a spot on the banner!
Scared192 29th Nov 2018, 9:51 PM edit delete reply
I have seen that bridge at Moria. I wonder if there is a Balrog somewhere.
Rocktopus 29th Nov 2018, 10:48 PM edit delete reply
Now that'd be a way to end the day off!
Gyffes 29th Nov 2018, 9:52 PM edit delete reply
How'd I miss that "question core beliefs" bit? What'd I miss? What'd I miss?!
Rocktopus 29th Nov 2018, 10:24 PM edit delete reply
"Face your inner demons" as in, facing her fear of the dark.
"Questioning her core beliefs" as in, getting splattered by horrible, fungus-rotten guts right as she she finished thinking about how her god is with her and was starting to believe in herself.
Hydrargyrum 30th Nov 2018, 2:10 AM edit delete reply
God splatters in mysterious ways, aye.
Sturzkampf 2nd Dec 2018, 8:41 AM edit delete reply
There are denominations who would regard being splattered with the guts of your god’s enemies as a positive.
Worstcase 29th Nov 2018, 10:20 PM edit delete reply
Seems Colleen has managed to clean up somewhat. - I still see some bloodstains so imperfect purification magic?

But yeah a break and some talking is definately a good idea at this point.

Maybe they should call the day quits as well, to make sure that brainrot mushroom infection has really been averted...
Rocktopus 29th Nov 2018, 10:49 PM edit delete reply
Naw just some water, a few rags, and a nice short rest dealing with it.

Loot, MarbleGate's loot-box therapy.
Edmund 30th Nov 2018, 5:46 AM edit delete reply
That's a pretty small pile of 'great loot'. Either there are some legitimately awesome magic/valuable items in there, or Randulf is still drunk.
ThorinSchmidt 30th Nov 2018, 1:02 PM edit delete reply
Don't forget, that's quite a bit for only one monster encounter.
Guest 1st Dec 2018, 9:01 AM edit delete reply
I'd say "probably both" but Colleen isn't that lucky. Unfortunately, only one of those is true.
Grim 30th Nov 2018, 7:19 PM edit delete reply
How big of a time jump is meant to have occurred? Seems like they've covered some extra dungeon we didn't, did they have to Dex save on that stairway when it collapsed?
Rocktopus 30th Nov 2018, 7:33 PM edit delete reply
It's only been about 20 minutes. They just walked back up and away from the beholder and spent the whole time cleaning Colleen off. All that loot was lying around in the background by the monster!

You can see the little blood trail from Colleen's mess coming over from where they were to where they are now.
Grim 30th Nov 2018, 8:27 PM edit delete reply
Ah, gotcha! I see that now. Can't wait to see where they go next!
Sturzkampf 30th Nov 2018, 9:55 PM edit delete reply
Of course in later years, this became one of The High Abbess Colleen’s favorite anecdotes about her adventuring days. She liked to tell it when the novices had stewed raspberries for tea.

Poor child. I wonder what desperate situation made her think a sweet innocent such as herself to explore the extreme life choice of willingly entering an evil gauntlet that feeds on the sanity of its victims?

Stay tuned for the next chapter to find out :)

That face in the top left corner... It have a judgmental gaze.

And I wonder if the pentagram on hte stairs is a trap, a clock or just a sign saying the bathroom are that way.
chris-tar 18th Jan 2019, 9:33 AM edit delete reply
That happens to me everyday too, only I don't have any loot to show for it...
MajorDZaster 16th Apr 2019, 2:44 AM edit delete reply
This was as far as Marblegate had gone when I first started reading.
Keep up the good work.
Alex Groggett 20th Jul 2019, 6:05 AM edit delete reply
A. That stairway looks familiar...

B. This is it, this is the first page I saw when I first heard about Marblegate and started reading it!
