Players who refuse to let their characters be fearful and weak miss out on glorious moments like this, where they push through and (possibly) triumph over what laid them low before. Sure, it's a little cheesy. But it's awesome, and makes for a great character.

absolutely. i'm so glad Colleen got to this place inside her before any other potential new party members could show up and save the day.

Well, it IS an actual debuff in D&D, and I can't imagine anyone giving their character a debuff willingly, even if only RP-wise.

I hope you give her a spell that makes her mace grow, it is a little too short for me in my opinion. A longer handled mace would benefit from added leverage and force.
Then she could really whack those Monsters!
Lurker 31st Jan 2019, 9:09 PM edit delete reply
It's part of the rulez that beginner characters don't get good weapons. You have to level up first, then you can buy weapon upgrades, like a better, longer mace. :-D You can't just wander in as a level 1 noob and expect to have a decent weapon! She's already lucky the DM didn't give her a literal matchstick as a starting weapon, as some games have been known to do. And she's already acquired a shield despite being still relatively inexperienced.
Vulcan 31st Jan 2019, 10:04 PM edit delete reply
Most rpgs (as opposed to computer games) allocate enough money to starting characters to buy decent - but non-magical - arms and armor. It's only computer games that really seem to delight in sending newbies out into battle with a wooden spoon and a t-shirt.
Lurker 31st Jan 2019, 10:46 PM edit delete reply
Haha, true. And I suppose this is especially the case with games that are deliberately designed to be hard, the kind that I like to play, that makes you start out with absolutely ridiculously inappropriate starting equipment that you then have to figure out how to survive with.

The classic example that comes to mind is Nethack, where you can choose to play a Tourist, who starts off with lousy stats, a Hawaiian shirt (that has zero protection against enemies) and a camera. No weapons at all! The initial game consists of fleeing from enemies and scrounging for better equipment while barely surviving with the skin on your back. With careful, creative play, though, like using the camera's flash to blind enemies (an unusual and very useful ability -- if used with forethought -- not found in any other starting equipment of any other character), it's actually possible to turn an initially unlikely survivor into a powerful hero.

By comparison, Colleen already has it good! :-D

Tourists start with darts that are somewhat serious... ok 1d4? But easy to get more.
Lurker 1st Feb 2019, 7:21 PM edit delete reply
Ahh you're right, my memory fails me. They do start with a bunch of +2 darts, which are pretty powerful stuff. But still.. considering the number of enemies you're facing, you gotta find more darts pretty quickly before you become mincemeat.

Of course, the challenge at the beginning of the game is offset by gaining some pretty powerful artifacts exclusive to the Tourist later on.

That's a nice quote! I've looked at Darkest Dungeon before, but it just looked too hardcore difficult for me to enjoy. Is it just an endless dungeon crawl of dying characters?
Rocktopus 1st Feb 2019, 9:19 PM edit delete reply
The first time you play, yeah, it'll probably be a meat grinder of characters. Once you know what you're doing, you will only rarely have a character death.

I've put about 400 hours into the game and I can get to the final boss losing only about 4 characters out of about 25
