Oh no, the inevitable looks to be happenning. I've never been a fan of arranged marriages, but I understand why they have been done for thousands of years, and in this case it's an attempt to save the family from ruinious taxes. Now we know just how much is riding on her success in Marblegate!

You gotta do what you gotta do to live

Interesting perspective you put forth of what it is like being a young girl who must "one day find a husband". As a male I never had this problem of course, but I sometimes have wondered what it might be like to be a woman, but then I think of child birth, and I thank God I never had to go through that! No wonder women want to have careers and be independent!

Sadly, I'm sure in some cases it would up being little more than legitimatized rape, and in many others very unhappy marriages.

Can't say I blame any woman who ever ran away from such a thing.

Not like you had much choice if you wanted your village to live, most of the time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And that right there is a point worth underlining. In the contemporary world we’re very individual-oriented: we think “me, myself, I”. Older societies, especially agrarian ones, are much more community-oriented: “my family, my tribe or clan, my village “. When the crop HAS to be brought in or everyone goes hungry there’s a lot less room for rugged individualists.

Also, you put some love into that village celebration scene. Great job.

Thanks! I wish I could have included a few more people, but it was just taking too long to finish the page!

'Couldn't afford to drink'? You sure this is the Green Isles? :-)

P.S. Guess who drew my new avatar.

Now you know what she truly meant when she said that they were "poor" :P

P.S. It was probably some nerd who sits in his apartment and makes webcomics for a living :P

Or it could be a talented, thoughtful artist who brightens and inspires the lives of strangers around the world with his art and stories. :)

I agree with Crevate. You are bringing light to a dark world with this comic.

thanks, I appreciate it. I was just joking, of course :)

You mean you don't manage to make a living out of it? :-) Seriously, copy paste what the other guys said. I've posted by new portrait on the Jaegerkin forum and the other Jaegers are seriously impressed. You might even get another commision next time they open.

I wish I made a full-time living out of making comics! But thank you so much!

About arranged marriages. One in a small enough village you are likely related very closely to the people around you. They are not the Hapsburgs :D ! So going way outside your family to find a marriage mate is a very good idea. Two, your parents are looking for good mate for you and not likely to pick a bad choice. Three any marriage can succeeded if both people communicate with each other. Also, more women died then men so there is a good chance that there may be a relatively rich widower in need of a wife and children in need of a mother. It's not always a bad thing those arranged marriages.
Rocktopus 13th Apr 2019, 6:31 PM edit delete reply
People also had less needs back then; you don't need a soulmate, or someone who shares in all your interests; you just need someone who can do their job as a partner and who isn't emotionally unstable

It's good that Sir Patrick acted knightly and helped the poor villagers. Though I have a nagging feeling he'll turn out to be not such a good man after all ...

Also, I wonder if clerics in this world are allowed to marry. If they aren't then joining the clergy might be how Colleen avoids an arranged marriage (plus there's historical basis for that too - becoming a nun was a respectable alternative for a girl who didn't want to get married, and offered greater social mobility too).
Rocktopus 14th Apr 2019, 5:36 AM edit delete reply
Great question! It will come up some time in the future, but priests and priestesses of the Highfather in this world are allowed to get married and have families (although, no promiscuity beforehand, obviously!).

There are however monks and nuns in the church. And their vows, unlike the priest and priestess vows, are more extensive and include a vow of celibacy from henceforth.

We can't be sure of what will happen to Sir Patrick once we return to the "present", but the text says he "is" a good man and our girl "likes" him, so he presumably survives this history and is still a nice guy when she starts going into Marblegate. Of course authors are known to make mistakes and even trick readers, but it is still the way to bet.
