"And why would somebody abandon a barn, but leave something valauble in it?" That is the kind of common sence you just dont see enough of these days. I hope nobody dies...

Why would someone abandon a barn but leave valuables in it? Because Something lurks there that's scaring them off, that's what.

OTOH, RPG games have kind of conditioned people to expect that empty barns always have some treasure or secret of some sort -- since in the context of games, esp. computer games, the author wouldn't have taken the trouble to put the barn there if there was nothing interesting there to begin with. And historically computer RPGs have tended to hide bonus content (special items, extra treasure, a "secret found" achievement, etc.) in seemingly-irrelevant places like abandoned barns, so nowadays people pretty much expect that if there's an abandoned barn, there's got to be something interesting there. Whereas in the real-world, an abandoned barn is precisely the kind of place you're *not* interested in, because chances are there's really nothing there.

But anyway, "Him" capitalized... is this where Colleen meets the High Father? Curious to see how this turns out.

...and that's why most of the characters played by female players survive, and the PCs of male players die...! ;-)

The potential for danger is half the fun!

Good luck getting the brothers out of that place before the sun goes down - which kid cares if there is anything 'valuable' in an abandoned place x_x even a dead rat or a half dried pot of paint are worthy treasures to anyone who loves playing pranks.
Not to mention: Secret Hideout anyone? I bet the only flaw the barn has in the twins' eyes right now is that it lacks the 'No girls allowed! - That means you, Colleen!' sign at the door. (But if the entire place doesn't come crashing down on them there, they'll likely be back right the next day to put said sign up.)

Yup, gonna be hard to convince them to to do anything else!

It would seem the boys like having their sister around, mostly to her regret. So it is more likely the sign will say "Welcome Colleen. No, that is not a bucket of farm byproduct over your head, and that is not a trap in the floor."

Colleen sure remembers a lot of things.

I get the feeling Colleen is going to feel His influence "control" her in order to protect her brothers... perhaps her first defensive spell?

I guess we'll see!

There is nothing more fun then exploring! Even if you do not find anything interesting you had that rush of finding it. One time I even found an old still site.
Rocktopus 8th Jun 2019, 4:50 PM edit delete reply
What's a still site?
Guest 8th Jun 2019, 6:29 PM edit delete reply
Maybe this: ?

A moonshine still. I was hiking the . I was hiking from HWY 341 Ozark Highlands Trail head to Gunner pool I was following the trail and looking for a place to spend the night. I go down the trail and come to a huge rock over hang with a small waterfall. I decide to spend the night there. I see a concrete barrel stove cemented to the wall of the overhang and a lot of scrap metal around it. It also had a very old road which was part of the trail as well leading to it. It did not take to long to realize what this place had been. Also, the water fall was interesting since it disappeared into the ground and did not form a stream. It was just a few miles away from Blanchard Springs Caverns. The area is full of Kurst formations.

Just the fact that its a rotten old barn is enough to warrant investigation! I remember when I was a kid, every time we'd move to a new house the first thing my brother and I would do is search for secret hidden things...

Given the state of the village, even iron nails would be worth recovering. And if there aren't any, that wood will keep several households warm through the coldest month of winter.

I recall reading of some visitors from Japan, about 1880, and when they saw a building burn down, they were surprised no beggars showed up to get the mails. Of course Asia has been known for having lots of the poor, but the average income in the US had increased 4-5 times since the start of the industrial revolution, which might have made even the beggars too "rich" to bother with mere used nails. Or our "Irish/Germans"may just use wooden "nails", which were quite common in the good old days when iron was expensive.

I would guess the barn collapses with her buried underneath for sometime.

She's claustrophobic for a reason and this is her origin story.
